The purpose of climate change and sustainability education is to understand better our relationship with
nature, how it has changed over time and how we can change it for the future. Recent research from the
Institute of Education has brought forward transformative learning approaches as a way to create space
for this level of deep learning to happen. In this editorial from the IoE, three constructs are highlighted as
being of central importance: “Critical reflection for deeper understanding and action, dialogue with others and experience.” p.4. Working at this deeper level goes beyond curriculum reform, it creates space for each student to turn values into action; anxiety into empowerment. The creation of a National Education Nature Park provides a practical opportunity for children to be active participants in transforming the education estate and be change makers.
