Hunter’s Bar Infant School had a problem with air pollution in the playground. Located in the apex of a roundabout junction, the playground was exposed to busy traffic and nitrogen dioxide levels had exceeded World Health Organisation limits twice in two years. Determined to clean their air, the staff at Hunter’s Bar collaborated with pupils, parents, and local businesses to create a living green wall made from plants known to absorb air pollutants and therefore create a barrier which cleans the air. As this is a common problem, the team behind this project are creating a toolkit to help other schools create their own playground pollution barriers too.
